Susan Barbour's Civil War Era Quilt

Star Pattern

Homeschoolers Unfolding History Quilt

This Quilt was made as a surprise for Elaine Forman
by members and parents of Homeschoolers Unfolding History
which is a chapter of Tar Heel Junior Historians.

The HUH quilt was on display at the 2007 Johnston County
Heritage Quilt Show where Elaine Forman accidentally saw it
and realized that the quilt was made for her.

The children and parents put lots of individual care and love
into every square and stitch, they had the adhesive bandages
to prove their love.

Homeschoolers Unfolding History is a History Club which is
locally sponsored by the Public Library of Johnston County
and Smithfield. Tar Heel Junior Historians is sponsored all
over North Carolina by the North Carolina Museum of
History in Raleigh.

Quilt Details from Susan Barbour's Civil War Quilt

Notice the variety of stitches used around each patch.

The stitch detail is amazing and the colors are vibrant.

Since black and white photographs
from the Civil War can
not begin to give us a glimpse at the colors,
it is wonderful
to see the variety of colors of cloth
that were available at
the time of the Civil War in this crazy quilt.

The ordinary tones of the squares above picture some of
the everyday fabrics as opposed to the silks of dresses.

A multitude of stitches set off the variety of fabrics in
this crazy quilt remnant.

One of the Oldest Quilts at the Quilt Show

Small detail of crazy quilt squares from one of
the oldest Quilts at the Show. Susan Barbour
showed this "Quilt in Progress/Frozen in Time"
The silks in this crazy quilt are fabrics from the time of the Civil War.

Feather stitches in various colors of thread make this
a strikingly beautiful display.

adjustments to the display.
